A LEAP in TIME

It’s a beautiful December morning, the air is filled with possibility, one of those rare days in which you feel glad to be alive; it’s actually the 25th but, as Christmas is not celebrated here, I’m off to visit the Museum of Seljuk Civilization. The museum is located in the city center, in the Mimar Sinan Park, making it very easy to spot.
I find myself in front of an un-impressive, grey building, a complex dating from the 13th century, comprising of two attached buildings: a hospital and a medical school (medrese), named after the princess of the Sultanate of Rum, Gevher Nesibe. What stands out are probably the two portals that facilitate the entrance to the two adjoining buildings, constructed in granite stone, typical for Seljuk architecture.

My first impressions of Kayseri...

I got here five days ago, but somehow it seems longer, and I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just that so many things have happened these past few days that time seems to have expanded (contrary to the scientific allegations) - visits to authorities, awesome meals, a paper plane contest, sight seeing through the city... so much to learn, so much to discover!
OK, so maybe this is not the most "exotic" place to be, but for me, having met so many wonderful people has got me thinking that maybe, just maybe, 6 months (the period that I'm supposed to spend here) it's not such a long time after all. You don't need me to tell you about traditions, weather, geography, food, religion, touristic attractions, the fact that you won't be able to have a beer in town (except for some hotels, maybe) or get along with locals because of the language barrier, as only a handful of them speak, let's say, English, nor about the huge smog that has come to be an inherent part of the scenery, you can google it yourself.

Daha önce Wroclaw’daki ilk günlerimi sizlerle paylaşmıştım. Şimdi kaldığım yerden devam etmek isterim. 

Buradaki 2.ayım, görev ve sorumluluklarımız daha da arttı. Ofis çalışanları sürekli olarak bir koşturmaca içerisinde. Bu sıralar ağırlıklı olarak İnsan Hakları üzerinde çalışıyoruz. Farklı yaş gruplarına yönelik workshoplar (atölye çalışmaları) düzenliyoruz ve aynı zamanda konferanslarımız oluyor.

Do you like Turkish foods?, EVS in KAYSERİ

Do you like Turkish foods?
Since I’m in Turkey, one of the most common questions that people ask me is: “do you like Turkish foods?”. Well, I have to say that it’s really a different foods from that one that I’m used to eat in Italy but I always accepted to try everything and then judge it. Now I’m going to tell about the food I tasted.
Let’s start from the best one! My favourite Turkish food is “Iskender”, a kind of doner kebab made of cut grilled lamb basted over pita bread with the adding tomato sauce, butter and yogurt. Still I don't understand why they put yogurt everywhere, but this is another question hahhahha. Anyway it's really delicious and full of calories!

BİRAZ DA GEZELİM - RUSYA

AGH (Evs) projem tüm hızıyla devam ederken izin günlerimde havalar henüz çok soğumadan fırsat buldukça gezmeye çalışıyorum.
Bir hafta sonu hosting (ev sahipliği yapan) ailem ile birlikte bir Rus köyüne ve kolektif bahçe adında köye benzeyen bir yerleşim yerine ziyarette bulunduk. Daça adı verilen evlerde kaldık , orada yaşayan insanlarla tarlaları gezdik, birlikte çalıştık, seralardaki sebzeleri toplamalarına yardım ettim. Bir yabancının onları ziyaret etmesi onları çok mutlu etti ve bir anda ilgi odağı oldum köyde. Herkes benim tatmam için bazı yöresel yemekler hazırladı. Hepsi çok lezzetliydi. Bütün gün gezdik, çalıştık, sohbet ettik ama yorucu olmanın aksine dinlendiriciydi. Şehrin gürültüsünden, kalabalığından uzakta doğanın içinde bu samimi ve misafirperver insanlarla zaman geçirmek huzur doluydu.

Görevimiz : Bu şehirlerdeki İngilizce eğitim veren liselere gidip sınıflara Erasmus+,EVS hakkında bilgilendirme seminerleri yapmaktı.
KAZANLIK
İlk olarak Burgaz-Kazanlık Tren ile 3 saat süren bir yolculuktu.

Rusya'dan tekrar merhabalar

Bugün size EVS projemin liderlik okulu ile ilgili kısmından bahsetmek istiyorum. Proje kapsamında pek çok önemli toplantı, eğitim ve TV programına katıldım. İşletme ve dış ticaret mezunu olarak benim için oldukça ilginç ve yararlı bir aydı.




Ufa'nın yerel kanallarından birinde kadın girişimciliği ile ilgili bir programa konuk olarak davet edildim. Programda gelecek planlarım, Rusya pazarı hakkında görüşlerim, Türk-Rus ilişkileri ve ticaret hacmi, Evs programı ile Rusya'ya gelme sebeplerim hakkında konuştuk. Yabancı bir ülkede kendi alanımla ilgili bir programa katılmak unutulmaz bir deneyimdi.

3.BÖLÜM / EĞİTİMLER-GÖREVLER (Bölüm 1)

    Bu bölümde sizlere Burgaz’da geçirdiğim günlerden, katıldığım eğitimler ve görevli olarak gittiğim şehirlerde yaşadığımız olaylardan kısaca bahsedeceğim.

    İlk olarak arkadaşlar Burgaz’da ki günlerim her zaman ki gibi çevreyi daha iyi tanımaya çalışmakla geçiyor. Burgaz’ın çok güzel deniz kıyısında büyük bir parkı var. Ben bazı sabahlar bu parka bisiklet ile gidiyorum. (Bisiklet ile 10 dk. Uzağımızda bu park) Bisikleti parka bırakıp parkta 2-3 tur koşuyorum. Böylece sabah sporumu yapmış oluyorum.

EĞİTİM

     Arkadaşlar hayatımda unutamayacağım bir eğitim olduğunu söylemeden geçemeyeceğim. Ben Burgaz’da yaşıyorum. Eğitim Varna’daydı. Otobüs ile 2 saat 30 dakika sürdü. Bu arada arkadaşlar Bulgaristan’da Şehirler arası ulaşımın % 90’ı küçük servisler ile yapılıyor. Neyse sabah erken saatler Burgaz da ki otobüs terminaline gittim biletimi aldım. Bilet bu arada 14 leva. Burgaz’dan Varna’ya eğitime giden 2 kişiydik. Diğer arkadaşımın adı Natacha kendisi Portekizlidir.

  Eğitime Farklı ülkelerden 70 gönüllü katıldı. Bu gönüllüler; Almanya,İtalya,Fransa,Türkiye,Letonya,Litvanya,İspanya,Portekiz,Avusturya,Çek Cumhuriyeti gibi ülkelerdi. İlk gün bütün gönüllülerle tanışmaya başladım. Hem İngilizce pratik yapıyordum hem de farklı kültürleri tanıma fırsatı buluyordum.

Wroclaw : Part II - POLONYA AGH

There and back again… The city where you might find your peace : Wroclaw.
One year ago, when I decided to explore whole around the Poland, I visited Wroclaw for 3 days. During those days, I have found many interesting places to take nice photos, had unforgettable memories with my host family and tasted local meals from restaurants in Wroclaw. Honestly, I was the one who fell in love with the atmosphere. But I must put a comma to that beloved city due to my back road to Turkey.
Just after one year, luckily, I found an opportunity to live – work as an EVS Volunteer in Wroclaw. ‘Semper Avanti’ approved my application, to make me one of them in the office, working places. That EVS programme aimed to work for European integration, human rights and spesific workshops which intend to inspirate youth’s mind and make them more international. Thus, I am capable of do those missions through motivate my team-mates in Semper Avanti. Here I came, to enlight new minds! 

The culture of Bazaar - Kapalı Çarṣı

If you live in Kayseri of course you know Kapalı çarṣı, the biggest bazaar in the city. You can find every kind of goods, from shoes to phones, clothes, jewellery and so on.

Who can guess how many shops are inside? Ok, I will tell you: there are exactly 910 shops. So many! To go inside you can use 18 doors, located on the perimeter, connected by 16 roads.
When I went inside I got the feeling to be welcomed, the shops are small and roads are narrow, not like in a mall. Tradespeople inside are relaxed (in Turkish tradespeople in bazar have a different name of other sellers, they are called Esnaf). It seems to go in a little community instead of a trade place.

Kaldığımız yerden devam :)

     Bugün 9 Kasım Pazartesi. 4 gün sonra Portekiz'e geleli 2 ay olacak. Şöyle dönüp bakıyorum da ne çabuk geçmiş zaman. Oysa geldiğim ilk günü hatırlıyorum. Buraya alışamayacağım diye akıttığım gözyaşlarını..Bizim dışımızda Türk arıyordum burada. 1 tane bile görsem, vatanıma kavuşmuş gibi hissedecektim çünkü. Çok şükür ki o sıkıcı zamanları atlattım ve buraya alıştım.

        Barcelos'taki üniversitede Erasmus yapan yaklaşık 10-12 kişilik bir Türk grubuyla tanıştık. Onlar da çok sevmişler burayı ve hiç gitmek istemiyorlar. Hatta ve hatta seneye başka ülkelerde tekrardan Erasmus yapmak isteyenler bile var. Bizim burada ne için bulunduğumuzu soruyorlar. EVS diyoruz, Avrupa Gönüllü Hizmeti diyoruz fakat çoğu gencimizin bu projeden haberi bile yok. Biz de başlıyoruz anlatmaya ve EVS, Erasmus'tan daha cazip geliyo onlara. Tabiki de daha cazip çünkü, en başta okul ve sınav stresi yok. Dilini geliştirmen ve farklı kültürleri tanıma şansın, kendini kişisel olarak geliştirip eksik yönlerini tamamlama şansın daha fazla. Ve en çokta insanlara yardım ederek elde ettiğin mutluluk...Bunlar genelde EVS'in proje kapsamında olan şeyler. Mesela huzurevlerinde, çocuk yuvalarında, kreşlerde bu projeyi sürdürenler için daha büyük bir mutluluktur diye düşünüyorum ben.

Güzel anılar biriktirdik*

Lizbon, Porto, Braga derken gezmekten yazmaya fırsat bulamadım. 2 Türk grubu geldi Barcelos’a onlara rehberlik yaptık. O kadar eğlenceli ve huzurlu zamanlar geçirdik ki dünya dertlerinden arındık adeta. Birilerine yardımcı olmak, sıkıntılarını halletmek, sorularını cevapsız bırakmamak, bana her zaman huzur vermiştir. Çünkü bencil hislere kapılmama müsaade etmez diğer insanların dertleri.
Portekiz’de geçirdiğim 1 aylık süre zarfında öğrendiğim birçok konu oldu ama dikkatimde kalanları paylaşmak isterim.

Yolculuk yaptıkça dünyada ne kadar küçük bir yer kapladığımı anladım. Toz tanesi bile değilim, belki de bir hiçim sadece bir hiç. Düşünmek ve öğrenmek için bol bol zamanınız oluyor.
Gelen gruplar Sakarya'dan ve Hakkari'dendi hepsi lise öğrencisi ama kocaman kalpleri var. Bölümleri bilgisayardı, bilgisayarla ilgili şirketlere götürdük onları biz de tercüme ettik anlatılanları. Gezileri oldu, gittiğimiz şehirlerin tarihsel yapıtlarını tercüme ettik. 1 ay onlarla otelde o kadar eğlenceli zamanlar geçirdik ki gitmelerini asla istemedik. Onlarda bizi sevmiş olmalılar bir gün odamıza geldiler.

Portekiz Barcelos'tan Selamlar

Portekiz Barcelos'tan tekrardan merhabalar.



Ekim ayı için biraz geç kalmış bir yazı oldu aslında. Ama öyle dolu dolu ve eğlenceli bir ay geçirdik ki. Türkiye'den Sakarya ve Hakkari illerinden 2 grup geldi. Grup lise öğrencileri ve yanlarında rehber öğretmenlerinden oluşuyor. Her iki grubun da bölümleri Bilgisayar'dı. Barcelos'ta onlara bölümleriyle ilgili olan yerleri gezdirdik ve rehberlik yaptık. Bizim zaten proje konumuz bu. Gelen Türk gruplarına rehberlik ve çeviri yapmak. Ha çok iyi İngilizcemiz mi var? Hayır ama anladığımız kadarıyla çeviriyoruz. Çünkü EVS'te illa dil bileceksin diye bir zorunluluk yok arkadaşlar. Bunu öğrenciler ve öğretmenler de biliyor zaten, söyledik kendilerine. Ama ilk geldiğimiz günlere nazaran İngilizce'yi anlama ve konuşmamız biraz daha iyi. Zamanla daha da iyi olacak inşallah. Sonuçta 1 yıl uzun bir süre ve bizim için büyük bir avantaj.

Have you ever celebrated Halloween?

Last week I organised my first activity at IYACA Youth Center. It was the 30th of October, so Halloween was very close and I started to ask to my Turkish friends if they were going to celebrate Halloween and if it is common to dress up in Turkey. 

I was very surprised to know that Turkish people are not used to celebrate Halloween, or at least not as much as we are used to celebrate it in Europe. I had a look in many shops of Kayseri and, as a matter of the fact, almost nobody was selling Halloween’s stuff. 

Suddenly I thought it was a good choice to focus the topic of my weekly activity on Halloween. I’m very glad I introduced Halloween origins and traditions to my friends at IYACA because for most of them it was the first time to have such a celebration. 

Trip to Avanos and Ürgüp – CAPPADOCIA

It was just my second day in Turkey when I visited Cappadocia with some IYACA friends and for me almost everything was new and special, but this trip was really the best part!

While we were traveling there by car, (it’s just 60 km far away from the city of Kayseri and it takes almost an hour to get there), my Turkish friends explained to me the history of this unique place. I’m not going to bore you like a touristic guide, but you have to know that one of the first civilisation in Turkey was born there and at that time this area was full of forests.

Now, when I gazed outside the car window, the flowing landscape looks very dry but still fertile due to volcanic debris. Especially, Cappadocia is known for the production of wine and people who live in the conservative city of Kayseri (which is the nearest city to Cappadocia with airport) they usually go there if they want to drink alcohol and have some fun. It's interesting that they go outside the city to enjoy, isn't it?

UNA VITA NUOVA - ITALY/BRINDISI

Bugün Brindisi deki hayatımın 1. Haftasını geride bıraktım. Burası çok küçük bir şehir, sokakları çok
dar, tarihi binaları çok fazla, küçük bir sahil kenti diyebiliriz. İzmir’den gelen biri olarak iklimine hiç
yabancı değilim. İnsanları oldukça yardımsever, paylaşımcı ve en az Türk insanı kadar sıcakkanlı.
Burada size her türlü yardımı sağlıyorlar ve bulunduğunuz ortam yüzünden özlem çekmiyorsunuz.
Gündüzleri sokaklar ne kadar tenhaysa akşam olduğunda aksine hayat yeni başlıyor diyebiliriz.
Kafeler, barlar, sokaklar akşamları gençlerle doluyor. Eğer sakinlik isterseniz limanda yürüyüş
yapabilir, Brindisi'nin dar ve şirin sokaklarını keşfedebilirsiniz.

Aslında projemin konusu kreşte çocuklarla vakit geçirmek, onlarla ilgilenmekti fakat proje mentörüm Laura ofiste onunla da çalışabileceğimi teklif etti ve tercihi bana bıraktı.Tercihim Laura ile birlikte çalışmak oldu ve dernekteki diğer çalışanları tanıdıkça iyi ki bunu tercih ettiğimi düşündüm :). 

WROCLAW - İlk Günlerim

Merhabalar Ben Özgür, 15 gündür EVS gönüllüsü olarak Polonya/ Wroclaw’dayım. 10 ay buralarda olacağım. Semper Avanti adında bir kurumda görev alıyorum. MLC (Multicultural Cafe) adını verdikleri bir etkinlik sahası var ve 15 kişiye yakın gönüllüyü barındırıyor bünyesinde. Benim bu etkinlik sahası içerisinde görevim, çeşitli alanlarda sunumlar yapmak (EVS,Türkiye,İnsan Hakları,Evsizler gibi). Bu sunumları okullarda yapıyoruz ve tüm yaş gruplarını göz önüne bulundurarak sunumları çeşitlendiriyoruz ve düzenliyoruz. Neredeyse her gün çeşitli atölyeler düzenleniyor. Burada çok yeniyim ve öğrenmem gereken çok şey var. Burada çalıştığım süre boyunca farklı deneyimler yaşayacağımı düşünüyorum. Hem kişisel anlamda beni geliştirecek hem de iş hayatıma katkı sağlayacak deneyimler. Teşekkürler. Özgür KARAKAŞ

Rusya-Başkurtistan / UFA'dan EVS

Evs gönüllüsü olarak Ufa(Rusya)' ya gelişimin ardından bir ay geçti ama sanki yıllardır burada yaşıyor gibiyim. Yabancı bir ülkede olduğumu farkedemyorum bazen çünkü hem kültürümüz çok farklı değil hem de sanılanın aksine buranın halkı arkadaş canlısı ve çok yardımsever. Ufa Başkurtistan'ın başkenti ve çok güzel bir çokkültürlülük örneği farklı kültürler, dinler ve ırklar birarada ve barış içindeler. Bunu görmek ve yaşamak çok güzel.

Burada bir ingilizce klübünde çalışıyorum 3 yaşındaki çocuklara ingilizce öğretiyoruz ve türkçe dersleri veriyorum ama asıl görevim Erasmus plus programının tanıtımını yapmak. Bu programın bir parçası olmak isteyenlere proje bulmalarında ve başvuru sürecinde yardımcı olmak. EVS hakkında yaptığım sunumlardan sonra pek çok insan böyle bir imkanın olduğuna ve tamamen ücretsiz olduğuna inanmakta güçlük çekiyorlar. Yaş gibi bazı problemlerden dolayı programa katılamayacak olanların üzüntüsünü gördükçe bu programın bir parçası olduğum için ne kadar şanslı olduğumu daha iyi anlıyorum.

2. BÖLÜM / Bulgaristan’da ilk Günlerim

2. bölümde de sizlere yolculuğumu ve ilk günlerimden bahsedicem.

İlk olarak proje gününün yaklaşmasıyla Bursa’dan İstanbul’a İstanbul’dan Burgaz’a otobüs bileti aldım. Çünkü Bursa’dan Burgaz’a direkt araba yoktu. Neyse 1 gün önceden yani 30 Eylülde İstanbul’a geldim. 1 Ekim sabahı kuzenim otogara geldik. Ve nihayet otobüse bindim ve yaklaşık 7 saat sürecek olan yolculuğa başladım.

Otobüse biner binmez göçmen muavin ve şoförün konuşmaları o kadar ilginçti ki gülmemek için kendime zor tuttum. Neyse zaman geçtikçe Bulgaristan sınırına yaklaşıyorduk. Sonunda Aziziye diğer bir adıyla Dereköy Sınır kapısından geçtik. Sınırdan geçtikten sonra yaklaşık 3 saat kadar daha gittikten sonra Burgas’a geldik. Beni Türk olan bir arkadaş karşıladı ve asıl serüven bundan sonra başladı.

Şanslıyım…

Burgas’a gelir gelmez bazı şeyler öğrendim. Mesela ilk gözüme çarpan büyük bir otelin eski Sovyetlerden kalma bir otel olduğu ve Türkiye den ünlü insanların oraya kumar oynamaya geldiğini öğrendim ;)

Merhaba ben Umut KILIÇ, Organizatörüm

İlk yazımda sizlere kısaca kendimden ve EVS’ye başvuru sürecimden bahsedeceğim.

        Ben Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Dış Ticaret Bölümünü yeni bitirdim. Üniversitenin ilk yıllarından itibaren organizatörlük yapıyorum. Seminerler, Tv Programlarına geziler, Kayak Turları, Tekne Turları ve birçok geziler düzenledim. Binlerce insanla tanıştım. Yüzlerce Organizasyonun içinde bulundum.

Şimdi gelelim EVS’ye katılmaya nasıl karar verdiğime

"Bugün Geri Kalan Hayatımın ilk Günüydü "

Bugün geri kalan hayatımın ilk günüydü,

        Aylar önce verdiğim radikal bir kararla Erasmus+ yapmak için Portekiz’e geldim. 1 yıl bilmediğim bir ülkede bilmediğim tonlarca insanla iç içe yaşamak nasıl olacaktı ki? Velhasıl kelam bindik uçağa Amsterdam aktarmalı geldik Porto’ya. Bizi karşıladılar ve bundan sonraki yaşayacağım eve geldim.

     Üniversite yıllarımda hep hayalini kurduğum Triplex bir villa da diğer ülkelerden gelen 10 öğrenciyle birlikte yaşayacağımı öğrendim. Dedim ya radikal bir kararla geldim o yüzden çoğu şeyi riske attım yaşayacağım yeri görmek istemedim mesela.. Sonra odamıza yerleştik, her bir ayrıntı beklenmedik derecede güzeldi.

Ola Portugal !! Ola EVS !!

12 saatlik yolculuğun son bulduğu o muhteşem ana geldik. Evet sondan başladım biraz 

ama bizim Türklerin adetidir en son söyleyeceğini en başta söylemek :)

 Aileni, sevdiğini,arkadaşlarını bırakıp gelmişsin. Burada nasıl bir ortamda ve ne tür insanlarla karşılaşacağını bilmiyorsun. Korku, heyecan, maceranın aynı anda yaşandığı bir durum bu. HELLO EVS! :)

10:40'ta İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen'de başlayan yolculuğun ilk partı 13:40'ta Amsterdam'da son buldu. Dil bilmiyoruz etmiyoruz, ne işimiz vardı oralarda değil mi? Hayır işte, öyle değil.Vücut diliyle yani bizim deyimimizle Tarzanca diliyle bi şekilde anlaştık biz. Sağolsun İstanbul'dan aynı uçakla geldiğimiz Türk gardaşlarımız da yardımcı oldular bize. Aynı günün akşamı 19:10'da Amsterdam'dan Porto'ya uçağımız var.

Living within the Muslim community

If you’ve been living all your life among Christians, then you cannot know exactly what the Muslim lifestyle is until you see it with your own eyes and live in their society. It’s different! It’s not worse or better, but most of non-Muslim people will find it very different. And most of the time we observe their customs and traditions and we act very surprised and sometimes even bothered by their behavior towards us, without knowing and understanding the essence of their beliefs. We judge without knowing the truth about Islam and we assume we are better and we know better.

BULGARİSTAN’DA GEÇEN 1 AY

Bugün Bulgaristan’a gelişimizin birinci ayı bitti AGH ‘miz süper başladı ve süper bir şekilde devam ediyor . Projemiz arkeoloji projesi olduğu için yorucu haftalar geçirdik . Şuan adapte olmuş durumdayız. İnformal bir şekilde Bulgarca öğreniyoruz; markette, manavda veya şehir merkezinde genelde Bulgarca kelime kullanmaya çalışıyoruz .

Manti traditional Turkish dumplings

I wrote before about traditional Turkish cuisine, and I’ve share with you which ones are my favorite here. But today I have to make a special post just about Manti, the most famous dumpling from Turkish cuisine. Manti dumplings typically consist of a spiced meat mixture, usually lamb or ground beef in a dough wrapper, and either boiled or steamed. And there is the vegetarian version, which involves bigger patches of dough filled with a mixture made out of onion and potatoes fried in oil.

Hunat Hatun Madrasah - The old Seljuk school

The madrasa is part of the Mahperi Huand Hatun complex, which also includes a mosque, a hamam (Turkish bath) and a mausoleum. The entire structure in build out of stone, and it was completed in 1238, under the name of Mahperi Hatun, the wife of Seljuk Sultan Keykubad I (1220-1237) and mother of Sultan Keyhüsrev II (1238-1246). Seljuk Sultans had madrassas built (usually as medical schools), named after their wives as well as themselves. The archaeological evidence indicates that the hamam is the oldest building from this structure.  

The madrasa, which once taught Islamic Law, adjoins the mosque at its northwest corner. This was a Seljuk school, where people received education in culture, science and art. In madrasa, as in  today's high schools and universities, education was given in four main subjects; Religion and law, language and literature, philosophy and sciences. There was not an established period of time for education. Students would complete their education in different periods of time, since the requirement to complete education was to finish reading the school’s books. Educational sessions would start after the morning prayer and continue until the noon prayer. Then students would retreat to their study cells surrounding the courtyard.

Manti are dumplings popular in most Turkic cuisines.

Manti dumplings typically consist of a spiced meat mixture, usually lamb or ground beef in a dough wrapper, and either boiled or steamed. ‘Manti’ indicates either singular or plural. Although is cooked also with potatoes in other variety.

In Turkish cuisine, although there are many different variations of manti in terms of shape and way of serving, the most praised type of Turkish manti is known as Kayseri mantisi, originally from Kayseri, Anatolian city, where we are! Kayseri mantisi is tiny and served with yoghurt, oil (caramelised with tomato paste) and seasonings. It can also be served with the water it was boiled in, and often in Kayseri it is consumed as a soup prior to the main dish. In Kayseri when a couple is engaged to be married, the mother of the groom visits the bride's house and during this visit the bride should prepare manti for her prospective mother-in-law. The smaller the manti dumplings are, the more the bride is considered to be skillful in the kitchen.

1-      Can you talk about yourself briefly?

Originally I’m from Iğdır. I completed my university education at Erciyes University and graduated from department of Business. I have been working for 19 years in Kayseri as the Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism.

2- What was your job before you were the provincial director of culture and tourism of Kayseri and Why did you choose this position?

I got the chance to teach in my student years, because this was my second university in the field of basic education. But after a while I gave up teaching and I became Founder and general secretary of the Institute of Health Sciences at Erciyes University. My student life passed with social activities such as mountaineering, folk dancing, and I even took part in the environmental clubs. Because of these activities and my social life and my second education at University, when my student life ended, I was accepted to Kayseri Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism. Thus my life was to begin here.

Kayseri City and Mimar Sinan Museum: The Digital City Museum

Kayseri is a city located in the central Anatolian region, in Turkey, and is well known for its amazing economic growth and development.

This culture museum is combining contemporary concepts for displaying the urban culture, using screens to play the video production about each aspect approached by the museum. The videos, may be watched in Turkish or in English on widescreen monitors.

My experience in Ramazan

Ramadan it's a really interesting time in muslims countries.

For a whole month, people who follow the tradition, don´t eat, don´t drink also water, or not smoking...de sunrise to sunset.

At about 20.13 in Kayseri the call from the mosques give the signal and dinner with family, friends. What is known as Iftar. And the city start to be crowded.

Discover Turkish culinary culture

Turkey has a very rich culture, involving religion, family, history and food. They are joyful people and like to celebrate everything. And how can you celebrate better than with a big meal. So there are a lot of things we can say about Turkish food. The most important is the taste, and trust me when I say it tastes good. There is something for all tastes: spicy, sweet, salty, colorful and all sorts of interesting mixtures. There is a lot of meat involved in Turkish cuisine, and each time they hear I am a vegetarian they look surprised and say that Turkey is not for vegetarians. But that is not true, because I found a lot of dishes without meat that I love.

Turkish cuisine has most of its heritage from Ottoman cuisine. Briefly I can say Turks love food. There is a lot of bread, meat, sugar (in everything), there is always salad on the table (at least as an appetizer), tea (black tea),  Ayran (Turkish yogurt drink) and Turkish coffee.

Ağırnas Underground City

I’ve found out history is a very popular topic in Turkey, and Kayseri and its surroundings are loaded with historical proof and stories.  One if the most popular historical attraction is the Ağırnas area, which is included in the metropolitan area of Kayseri, but is a town with its own municipality. We had to take a bus to get there, because it’s about 25 km from the city center.

Projede ilk haftamızı tamamladık.Bulgaristan Maceramız 01.07.2015 tarihinde başkent Sofya’da başladı. Bizi proje koordinatörümüz Dijiliana Sofya Havalimanı’nda güleryüzlü,samimi bir şekilde karşıladı. Sofya’ya adım atar atmaz hostel yolunda arabayla küçük şehir turu yaptık. Hostelimize yerleştikten yaklaşık 2-3 saat sonra Sofya mentörümüz Polina bizleri hostelden alıp şehir turuna çıkardı. 

Bulgaristan'dan Merhaba

Bu yazımı şuan Balkanlar'da yer alan  komşu ülke Bulgaristan'dan yazıyorum.
Balkan, Rodop ve Rila gibi dağlarla çevrili bir ülke. Rila Dağı üzerindeki Musala Zirvesi, Doğu Avrupa'nın en yüksek noktasıdır. Kuzeydeki Tuna Ovası ve güneydeki Yukarı Trakya Ovası da Bulgaristan'ın alçak ve verimli bölgeleridir. Son yapılan nüfus sayımına göre toplam nüfus 7 Milyon civarındadır. Ülkede Bulgarlar sayıca fazla olsa da etnik köken oldukça farklı. İklim olarak ise Bolu-Abant tarafları ve Karadeniz yöresine benziyor.

What is Ramadan?

I’ll try to make it short, I promise! Here it goes …
Ramadan (or Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, Ramathan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this month Muslims worldwide fast to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic and it means scorching heat or dryness.

Ramazan is all over the city, this special celebration cannot be missed.

Cappadocia/Kapadokya

Cappadocia is a historical region in Central Anatolia, largely in the Nevşehir, Kayseri, Aksaray, and Niğde Provinces in Turkey.

Visiting the Governor’s Office

As a volunteer, I’ve got the chance to meet some important people from Kayseri. Volunteering is fun, creative and full of rewards, but if we want to keep it that way, we need some support from the local authorities. This EVS project that brought me here, is a premiere for Kayseri, and we need to create awareness about our project, "EUROPEAN YOUTH VOICE", and share some general information about our current activities and future plans.

İtalya'dan Selamlar

İtalya Brindisi’den selamalar, İYACA Ailesine bu güzel projede yer almamızı sağladıkları için teşekkür ediyorum. 

Brindisi’de güzel bir hafta geçirdim. Proje mentörümüz Laura, bizi güler bir yüzle karşıladı ve yolda sohbet ederek evimize götürdü. Ertesi gün proje ile ilgili detayları konuştuk ve bize çevreyi gösterdiler. İlgililer ve en az onlar da bizim kadar heyecanlı. İtalya’ya gelmiş olmanın verdiği heyecanla ilk günden etrafı gezmeye, keşfetmeye başladım. Yeni bir ortama girmiş olmanın, yeni insanlarla tanışmanın ve böyle bir projede olmanın keyfine varıyorum.

Çoğu kişinin hayalidir İtalya ya gitmek, Ben bu hayalini EVS ile gerçekleştiren onlarca şanslı insandan biriyim. İlk başlarda yabancı bir ülkeye gitmek, orada 4 ay kadar bi süre kalmak korkutucu gelsede 2 haftada buralı gibi oldum. Daha Roma havalimanına adımımı attığım anda farklılığı hissetim. Brindisi'ye indiğimizde bizi proje sorumlusu olan Laura karşıladı. O da bizim kadar heyecanlıydı. Arabaya binerken İtalya ile ilgili farkettiğim ilk şey arabaların küçücük olmasıydı.

Visiting Kayseri Provincial Directorate of Youth Services and Sports

Today we were at the Youth Services and Sports center, in Kayseri.

The director received us with great enthusiasm, and invited us for a short conversation about our cultural differences and personal beliefs about religion. I think this is the most common discussion topic, especially with foreigners, and especially during Ramadan.

Starting adventure ...

The trip from Spain was very long and tiring, but along the way i met different people with whom I had very interesting conversations ...

In Kayseri I met very good people with whom to share the experience, and since I arrived six days ago I´ve enjoyed several new activities to me as attending a rock concert Turkish first day ...

The day before the Ramazan in Kayseri, Turkey. Welcome to Ramazan!

Yesterday me and Miriam, along with the other volunteers from IYACA, were at "Welcome to Ramadan" festival (ŞEHR-İ RAMAZAN), which was held in the Mimar Sinan Park. The park was named after Koca Mi'mâr Sinân Âğâ, who was the chief Ottoman architect and civil engineer for sultans Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II, and Murad III.

How did Julia got to Kayseri as a participant of European Voluntary Service – 15.06.2015

I woke up excited knowing I’m going to arrive in a new city by the end of the day. Not knowing how it will be in Kayseri, made me feel a little anxious, but my curiosity about knowing new cultures and a different lifestyle kept me very optimistic about the whole experience.  

4 am. I woke up, put a smile on my face, got ready for the long day that was ahead of me. I hugged my mother and kisses my dog goodbye (cuz I knew I’ll miss them). My father dropped me off at the airport (Henri Coanda International Bucharest Airport). I hugged him goodbye, and entered the airport, leaving behind all misconception about Turkish culture, because that that was my destination.

Flight from Bucharest to Istanbul

On my way to Kayseri, I had a stop in Istanbul (arriving at Atatürk Airport )  for about 7 hours. Good thing this was not my first time in Istanbul, and I have a friend there. I met with my friend, to get some breakfast on Galata Bridge and spend a couple of hours admiring the city.

European Voluntary Service, a new experience....

Always I liked to travel and learn about other cultures, but this might be a different way, I met the European Voluntary Service through the Internet and found a great opportunity to travel while working with a project in the country of destination. Turkey.

Everything was very easy, through the association that handled my volunteering in Spain where I come from and who acted as intermediary with the association of destination IYACA!

Everything was ready; airline ticket, passport, and contact with the association previously through Facebook ... just wait for the exact day to begin my adventure.
