My first experience with EVS

Hello everyone,

I am Fulya. This project is the first similiar experience to me. Firstly, if you make use of your time well you can learn a lot. I completed the first month of three month long-term project in Romania. The project is implemented in Ciorogarla, 17 km West of Romania. I had new experiences in this country. If I were the describe the project, it is about acculturation with children at High School. Initially the language had become a problem for us. However, now we have a stronger communication with children. While we teach them Turkish culture and language, they teach us Romanian culture and language. We live in a dormitory next to the school. We have to cook in our shared kitchen.

Ankara's hidden gems for art lovers

Every time when I am traveling abroad my first encounter with the place starts from exploring the old parts of the city, enjoying unique architecture, and trying local cuisine. However, recently I have realized that in order to get to know the area better it is necessary to go further than the city center, which is often crowded with tourists (that might make many of us feel annoyed), because the real spirit of the city is often more visible far from the touristic gems.

Since I am a huge fan of street art and all forms of modern art in general, I have been trying to find some interesting places here in Ankara that are usually out of must-see lists. However, there is not much information provided on the internet, therefore I wish my text will not only encapsulate my experience in Ankara so far but also be benefıcial for many tourists who are looking for additional information before coming to the capital of Turkey.

Learning about history of Turkey

This blog will be a short introduction to modern Turkish history. So the blog will be maybe boring but full of information.

Being a longterm volunteer in Turkey means to get familiar and used to Turkish culture, it means learning a lot about their history. What you can’t miss is the picture of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his Picture hangs everywhere as he is considered as the national hero. Even little kids in kindergartens are learning about this legendary hero who achieved an outstanding military and political victory and established a republic on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. In two weeks there were 2 big days, connected to the history of Turkey, especially to Mr. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

EVS projesini arkadaşımdan duyduğumda o kadar heyecanlanmıştım ki benim için gerçekleşmesi  hayaldi ve ilk kez yurt dışına çıkabilme fırsatı doğmuştu. Hayalim  gerçek oldu ve şimdi Romanya Bükreş Ciorogarla`dayım. 

İlk haftalar biraz zorlu,  alışmaya çalışarak ve Türkiye ile kıyaslayarak geçti. Hatta daha önce evs yapan arkadaşıma " şimdi seninle konuşmayalım buraya alışınca konuşuruz. “ diyerek ona biraz çocukluk yaptım. Sonrasında tabi durumlar değişti , arkadaşım ile farklı zamanlarda aynı şehri gezmek çok özel  ve farklı bir deneyim oldu. Her şey için teşekkür ederim Kübracım . Alışma evresinin uzun sürmesinden korkmuştum neyse ki 1 hafta sürdü. Diğer haftaların nasıl geçtiğini anlamadım ve buraya geleli 1,5 ay oldu.

Hayatımda hiç yapamam dediğim mesleği öğretmenliği aynı dili konuşamadığım öğrencilerle deneyimlemek muhteşem bir duyguydu. Okul günlerimiz öğrencilere Türkçe kelimeler öğreterek ,onlardan Romence kelimeler öğrenerek ve hocalar bize Romanya kültürünü ve geleneklerini anlatarak eğlenceli bir şekilde geçiyor. Sanırım hayatta en güzel  ve anlamlı şey paylaşmak ve sürekli etkileşim halinde bulunmak yani gönüllü olmak.

Ben Esra. Bu proje benim ilk AGH deneyimim ve aynı zamanda Romanya’ya ilk gelişim. Özellikle bu bölgede bir projede yer almak istememin nedeni; yüksek lisans çalışma alanımın Balkan milletleri ile alakalı olmasıydı. Bu açıdan böyle bir projede yer alarak hem ülkeyi ve insanlarını hem de kültürlerini yakından tanıma fırsatına sahip olduğumu düşünüyorum.

Projeden bahsedecek olursam;  içeriğinin genel olarak eğitimle alakası olması, çocuklarla birebir iletişim kurmamızı ve yeni tecrübeler edinmemizi sağladı. Birlikte yapmış olduğumuz dersler, oyunlar ve aktiviteler aracılığıyla çok çabuk kaynaşmış ve kültürel etkileşim sağlamış olduk. Bütün bu aktiveler sayesinde hem biz onlara Türkçe öğretip, Türk kültürü hakkında bilgi verdik; hem de onlar bizlere Romence öğretip kendi kültürleri hakkında bilgiler verdiler.
